Cleaning Tips for Your Pontoon Carpet
The first step is to throughly vacuum the carpet with a shop vac or other vacuum only machine. Avoid using your house vacuum because vacuums with a fiber agitator can actually damage your carpet and cause fibers to become detached or loops unstiched. So, first make sure you vacuum up all the debris, loose sand or dirt. Next, lightly soak any stained areas with a household detergent or carpet cleaner. Allow to soak in for 10 or 15 minutes. This will loosen the stain and allow it to be vacuum up. Next, use a steam vacuum , like the style you rent from your local hardward store. Use a high quality carpet cleaner or boat carpet cleaning solution to steam clean your carpet. Your pontoon carpet should come out looking fresh and new. Allow to dry overnight.
How to Replace Your Old Worn Pontoon Boat Carpet
If you decided that your carpet is beyond cleaning and needs to be replaced you first need to unbolt or unscrew all pontoon furniture items including removing all pontoon seat sections, corner section, storage units and the driver's console. After removing these items, remove any trim that covers the edges. This should also be screwed down and easily removed. Next, you can begin to pull the carpet up starting from one of the corners. Work your way towards the center of the boat using a putty knife to break the glue barrier. The carpet should pull up fairly easily. If not, a heat gun can to soften the glue or a glue solvent may be available at your local marine suppy store. After all the carpet is pulled up and removed, scrape the remaining glue up using your putty knife. Any excessive glued aread that can't be scraped off should be sanded down smooth using a power sander. The debris should be swept up or vacuumed up and now is a good time to inspect the decking. Make sure that all wood is free from rot and decay. If it's not, then now's a good time to unscrew and replace the decking boards. Use a good marine grade, pressure treated decking plywood made specifically for boat decks. Do not use standard plywood as it will rot and decay prematurely. Once the decking is properly prepared for the new carpet, roll out the new carpet and let it lay flat for a while. After the carpet has flattened out fairly well, cut roughly to size leaving about 1 foot overhang over all edges. This will allow you to move it around a little and not have to worry about making a mistake and not having enough to cover all the decking. Next fold over 1/2 of the carpet to approximatley the center of the boat. Begin to apply the pontoon carpet adhesive working from the center forward. Apply adhesive in two to three foot increments until you read the end. Then do the same working in the opposite direction starting from the center. Make sure the carpet is smooth and all air pockets are pushed out using a garage style broom upside down.
After your pontoon carpet is smooth and flat you can cut to fit as required, replace the trim edge and the pontoon furniture.
