Pontoon Trailer Wheels and Bearings

Boat trailer tires and bearings are the most common items that fail pontoon boaters when trailering their boat.  The tires get old and dry rot which means the rubber has hardened and started to crack.   The tires can leak air unexpectedly, especially under load and while driving.  In addition pontoon trailer wheel bearings dry out after just a few years of use.  

 The grease disappates and evaporates leaving the bearings without the necessary lubricant to reduce friction and heat.  Underload and while driving at normal speeds, the bearings can heatup to the point where they fuse together with the outer casing resulting in a frozen bearing.  The bearing hub begins to fail at this point and can result in the trailer wheel and rim from coming off the trailer axel.   This can cause severe accidents and damage to your pontoon,  pontoon trailer and the vehicles nearby.  So,  check your pontoon trailer wheels and bearings every spring to make sure they're in good shape and ready to roll.
