VHF Marine Radios
VHF marine radios or "very high frequency" marine radios enable the boater to contact and communicate with other boaters or locations from a great distance. But their main purpose is emergency communication with the coast guard and every boater should have a VHF marine radio on board regardless of the size of their boat.
VHF marine radios operate in the 150-170MHz range, with 156.8MHz being the "emergency" broadcast frequency the Coast Guard monitors. They are limited to 25 watts of transmitting power and their range is typically around 4-6 miles, but it depends on where you mount your antenna. The higher you can mount your antenna the further you can transmit and recieve marine emergency calls.
